Two men were trapped when the house they were working on collapsed, killing one and leaving the other in a life-threatening condition.

A man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene in Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to reports of two people injured while carrying out building work at an address in Church Brow at around 12.55pm.

As well as the man who was pronounced dead, a second man, in his 40s, was rushed to hospital by air ambulance with "life-threatening injuries".

Police said he remains in an "extremely serious condition".

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "Our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this awful time.

"A road closure is in place on Church Brow so we would ask people to avoid the area and for motorists to find alternative routes where possible.

"We are working with colleagues at the Health and Safety Executive, though the matter remains with police while enquiries are carried out into the cause of the incident."

Several fire engines, police cars, ambulances and an air ambulance attended the scene.

Tributes flooded in for the tragic victims online. One said: "Saw the air ambulances land. Thinking of all involved."

Another added: "Tragic."

One local wrote on Facebook: "Thoughts with everyone involved and to the friends and family of the lad who passed away. So sad."

"Thoughts and prayers are with the family of the men," another person said.

Police also closed the road and asked motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
