Louise Osmond and Jerry Rothwell bring up a magnificent documentary around the first single-handed, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race held in 1968, the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Two prizes were giving, a golden globe to the man who finishes first in the race, and a 5000 pounds prize for the fastest man, but that was nothing compared to have your name written in the history books. There were no participation requirements, for this race wanted also to award those sailors who were already at sea on their private round the globe seas sailing adventure, the sailors were to start the race anytime between the 1 till the 31 of October, in order to avoid the winter weather of cape Horn. Into the Wild is a beautiful trip into the beautiful side of America. Chris (Emile Hirsch) is a free spirit youngster after his high school graduation and before College, takes live into his hands and decides to cut free all ropes that attached him to his family.
He takes his old car and heads to Alaska ready to face all kind of ordeals and adventures. He decides to let go all material things, burns his money an stars his way mingling with nature on a highway to self encounter. On this he will find interesting aquentances who which he shares knowledge and thoughts. Picture is awesome, music likewise. Sean Penn, well done! Score: 7
The narrator, Werner Herzog, with a strong German accent (yes, the director of “Little Dieter needs to fly”), takes a trip to this isolate virgin scientists paradise and looks like he falls in love with it. During the stay he manages to interview the small number of special chosen individuals dwelling there: some members of the scientists community, other handymen, other computer specialists. An amazing voyage into the Antarctica, an amazing beautiful, quite, dangerous, place filled with secrets ready to be revealed to the curious mind. Sometimes this place reminds you of the images we have of the moon. Fauna, flora, rocks, volcano, microorganisms, all of them are observed and studied. Each of the persons that live has his own attractive story. A trip into the unknown, I hope human predetermination does not disturb the true hiding behind all the special phenomena present in this awesome piece of our globe. It is amazing how after the great effort human put into exterminating all living creatures in this part of the world such as the seals, the latter don’t hold a grudge and collaborate. Score: 6.
